Method

As an avid fan and active member of the EDM community both on and offline for the past 5-6 years, I feel I am qualified to confirm or deny the accuracy of many of the statements made in the literature. For the most part, the articles I found actually did help to confirm many beliefs I previously held. However, in order to further research EDM fans general behavior and verify certain statements made in the literature, I conducted a survey on twenty members of my Greek life organization who regularly listen to EDM, like myself, and asked them questions related to social media habits, artists, and festivals. Before starting my research I was unaware of any notion that EDM fans are super-active about their fandom on social media. I personally am not active on Twitter and neither are most of my friends, so I was somewhat surprised to see the findings posted by Eventbrite; saying how EDM fans are wildly more active compared to average users and fans of other genres of music because they often engage in discussions about EDM and EDM related subjects (artists, festivals, etc).  The questions I asked are as follows. 1) Do you post on social media when you attend a show? 2) Do you follow EDM artists or EDM festival accounts on any forms of social media? 3) Do you tag the artists/festivals you see when you post? 4) Have you ever had any interaction with artists on social media? And 5) How do you feel about artists who have a third party manage their social media accounts as opposed to artists who personally handle their own?

Results

For media platforms when they attend a show and 5 responded no they do not. Question two, 16 participants responded that they do follow EDM artists on various social media accounts, while 4 said they do not. Question three, 12 participants said that they tag the artist they went to see in their social media posts, while 8 said they do not. Question four, 9 participants said that they have had interactions with artists on social media, while 11 said they never have. Of all the interactions it pretty much boiled down to 50% replies to a tweet and 50% replies to an Instagram comment. Finally, for question five, when asked how they feel about artists who outsource their personal social media accounts, 15 responded, “it negatively affects my opinion of them”, 4 responded, “I don’t care much personally”, and 1 responded, “I understand, they're busy with other stuff”.
